Electric Energy’s Brief History
Although it may be hard to believe, electricity as we know it today was actually discovered several hundred years ago by the Greeks. They found that if you rubbed amber onto fur, it created a static charge of electricity, and that this charge would pull other materials towards it, such as feathers.
It wasn't just the Greeks who put this new energy form into use; many other nationalities and ancient societies also used a type of electricity called electroplating into effect. Connecting two jars made of pottery and containing vinegar together with a wire created a primitive yet effective battery. This would then be used to produce electric charges that would attract coins and other small pieces of metal to each other.
Perhaps the most famous of all electrical discoveries is that of the light bulb, discovered by Benjamin Franklin over two hundred years ago. It's hard to imagine a time without electricity now, with the advances that have been made since those pioneering days.
Electric Energy Today
Nowadays electricity is such a part of everyday life that we often forget we're using it. With virtually every home in America now using some form of electricity to power some part of the property, it truly is an integral part of modern living. To give an example, people are so used to electricity's use and importance in making life easier, that even when they "get away from it all" on a camping trip, they take along generators and other power sources!
Whereas electricity was supplied in small numbers in the past, today huge power plants have sprung up to make sure that all our needs are met. These plants don't simply use one source of energy to make electricity, either – it can be harvested from such various methods as nuclear fusion, coal being burnt, and rubbish and other waste being burned as well.
Since electricity has become such an integral part of our lives, demand is understandably high, and this can lead to problems. In densely populated areas like New York or California, for instance, there are frequent power shortages and blackouts due to demand outstripping supply. This has led to ways being sought that can provide extra electricity to areas like this; with New York especially having such a polluted atmosphere, companies are looking at how they can use the city's waste to provide electricity.
Electric Energy In The Future
The problem with this is that waste burning leads to even more pollution, which in turn affects the planet's atmosphere and protective ozone layers. Therefore, scientists are continuously looking at more effective ways to provide electricity. Solutions such as wind pumps, hydraulic power, and waste processing plants as opposed to waste burning plants are now being set up, and with the amount of electricity that people use on an everyday basis, this has got to be a good thing.
