Read any variety of magazine or news forums online today, and you'd be forgiven for thinking that the world is in danger of imploding from giant corporations and businesses alone, as they monopolize what energy sources we use and how we use it. Oil, for instance, is one of the most frequently used resources, so therefore it would makes sense that the big companies involved make as much money while strangling the reserves. Although this isn't 100% true, our oil will run out eventually, and while not leading to the dark ages of our ancestors, it will require us to look for alternative avenues.
How Many Alternative Energy Sources Are There?
Whilst oil is undoubtedly one of the main, if not THE main, source of our energy use and requirements, there are a host of others available. It's not just the usual suspects of water or wind-powered either; now the likes of solar and geothermal are finding popularity as well. As well as being alternative sources of energy, the reason they are being used more is because they don't emit the same type of waste or pollution that gas and coal are known to. They can also be used repeatedly, therefore making them much more cost effective, and there can be no real monopolies either, at least not at the moment, due to their widespread availability.
Surprisingly, though, most companies are still using oil as their main source of energy. Although this is changing, it's not at a fast enough rates and the oil reserves are still dwindling faster than the planet and nature can handle. If this continues, not even the biggest companies changing their practices will be enough.
With the damage already done to the atmosphere, as so comprehensively shown by the likes of the greenhouse effect and the depletion of the ozone layer, continued use and pollution from oil, coal and other such energy sources will only make matters worse before they have a chance of getting better. Therefore, there's never been a better time than now to look at alternative energy sources, and actually use them as opposed to just consider them. Otherwise we won't have a planet, or people, to provide any energy for…
